Two of the top New England prep players available in the 2011 NHL Draft received All-Star recognition from the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association (NEPSIHA) this week.
Defenseman Colin Sullivan and goalie Steve Michalek were named to the NEPSIHA West All-Star Team and look like strong bets to get picked in the June draft.
Sullivan is a fast-skating, no-frills defenseman who is about as solid as they come without having the flashy offensive element to his game.
Michalek was beseiged for much of the year and put up some remarkable statistics this season on one of the poorer prep teams (3-20-2) on the circuit (.918 save percentage and more than 1,000 saves on the year, which is unreal for a highschool goalie playing in 45-minute games). He used his strong performance in winning the silver medal at the Ivan Hlinka tourney as a springboard to a sensational senior season for the Pelicans.
Michalek is featured in the March issue of New England Hockey Journal, so if you are near a New England rink, pick it up. Sullivan will be the prospect story for April in the NEHJ.
Both guys are from the Nutmeg State (Sullivan from Milford and Michalek from Glastonbury) and we'll have more on them in the days and weeks to come.
