Welcome to the first draft pick update for the month of March. Yes, draft watchers, the season is winding down. We're a little over 30 days from the conclusion of the regular season, and the 2011 lottery will follow soon thereafter.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs have picked it up considerably since January, while other teams around them have been in steady free fall: Colorado, St. Louis, Florida and Atlanta to name a few. The long and the short of it is this: the Leafs have kept the teams who have been behind them in the standings in the rearview mirror, while moving past clubs ahead of them. They've moved out of the bottom five and are knocking on the door to get out of the top-10.
The way we see it, if the Bruins are picking seventh or earlier, it will be a huge bonus. At this point, it just looks like Toronto is going to be good enough to finish anywhere from 8-11 and possibly even higher if James Reimer keeps stealing games for them. Toronto has a chance to pick up points in the standings with games against the Islanders, Panthers and Avalanche in the next 14 days. They also have some important swing games in the standings vs. Buffalo and Carolina. The Bruins get the Leafs twice this month, too.
So, that's the waffle watch for the week.
